So, what happened to Slippers? Let's continue the story. As we looked at her, trying to coax her to climb down, and put out her favorite food on the deck, she would not come down. We didn't have a long enough ladder to reach her. As I was searching for resources to help, I called Charlie's Cat Rescue, and they didn't have any way to help us. They suggested we call the fire station. In our town, it is a volunteer brigade. I didn't want to call 911, so I tried to phone the station directly. No answer. I called the neighbouring town fire station. No answer. Remember, it was Sunday evening, so who to call? I decided to call the non-emergency number for the local police. Finally, someone answered, but the lady explained that it was a myth that firemen would help reach a cat stuck in a tree. While waiting and trying to coax Slippers to come down, we suddenly heard a loud crack that sounded like a tree had broken and was about to fall. No tree fell, so we looked around. Slippers was still perched up but in a nearby tree, a big branch broke under the weight of ... a raccoon! We really had no other resources. Gabriel stayed on the deck and planned on sleeping there until the cat came down. By then, she likely had been in the tree for over 24 hours. Slippers finally decided to climb down around 2 am. Luckily, she didn't fall and didn't hurt herself. We were quite happy. Gabriel brought her in, and she was "grounded" indoors for a day! Was she chased up by a raccoon? That is a possibility but hopefully, she won't repeat this adventure. -
