@Mary Solaas @Corrie Kinkel You can get the pspshape file here: http://www.toroscope.com/files/USA-MAP.zip. I warn you...it wasn't done as elegantly as it could have been...if you load it up and look at the vectors there are ALOT of objects throughout the thing and I wasn't completely methodical i.e. start in upper left and work all the way across then down some and again etc. I kind of jumped around until I had all the borders. PS...remember Carole's lesson on file types regarding this...just unzip and put the pspshape file into documents/CorelPSP/Preset Shapes folder.3 points

I like your version better, nicer design, especially the wing and tail and chest area.2 points

@Ann Seeber @Mary Solaas @Corrie Kinkel OK. Need to lose the period that ended up in the link at the end. Let me try again. http://www.toroscope.com/files/USA-MAP.zip Better to copy and paste the link in the address bar. When I tried on my reply, it gave me something about unsecure download. Should work fine just typing it in or pasting it. OR BEST...right click then "Save link as" from this post.2 points

Ants will farm aphids, as aphids feed on the sap of plants, they secrete a liquid called honeydew. Aphids are sometimes called plant lice, but they are not related. Aphids are closely related within the suborder Sternorrhyncha. Lice belong to the suborder Troctomorpha, in the order that also contain book lice, barklice, and bark flies. We look for aphid infestions in the crops. I studied the aphid when I was recording and documenting the life cycle of the ladybird several years ago. As Ladybirds feed almost exclusivley on aphids.2 points

Ann in turn I didn't know this. I used the translation of the Dutch word "luis" or plural "luizen" and found louse or plural lice. It are those little greenish basterds that leave a sticky surface on the plants and ants love them! When you notice them in the garden than you are sure to see ants feasting on them. We use the word "luizen" also when there is a lice infestation in the hair of schoolkids. It seems that lice is a more generic word for a small and wingless parasitic insect on man, animals and plants , while aphids is only used for plants. At least according to my old and trusted Webster's New World Dictionary.2 points

@Daniel Hess It is there in my PSP2023 Preset Shapes folder. If it might not work in 2023 I can move it to 2022 ... I think I'll try that. OK, that worked! Thanks Daniel.1 point

It looks like the lion is getting a foot TICKLE to me. Another great calendar page as usual. I love seeing them each month.1 point

I got to playing with the USA States shared by Daniel Hess. I did a bunch of stuff to it including adding Hawaii and Alaska at the bottom and then put it on top of an American flag. Then I got it into my head to create a July 4 celebration using it. The background paper is from Creative Fabrica The text is Microsoft Himalaya from who knows where.1 point

@Ann Seeber Maybe search the "documents" folder for USA-MAP.PspShape and see where it landed. Apparently NOT in the documents/Corel Paintshop Pro/2023/Preset Shapes folder. ??? I don't have 2023...I didn't see anything that tripped my trigger better than 2022 but am ANXIOUSLY awaiting to see what 2024 is going to bring. I figure the best of 2023 will also be included in that. Punctuation is KEY in the file names and folder names...you miss one capital letter and it will give you nothing.1 point
-
@Daniel Hess I put the file in the Preset Shapes folder as you suggested but I don't see how to bring the shapes up. They don't show up in my PSP 2023 Preset Shapes. I can see the ones I put there from the class but not your map. Do you have a suggestion?1 point

Daniel thank you, I got it and by seeing how Ann did it, I just typed the link in the address bar. This way I didn't get a message about unsecure download and my anti virus software is usually very picky. Clearly there are many ways to do things.........1 point

Got it! Thank you. I did have to copy/paste as the link also gave me the "unsecure" flag. Thanks again, Daniel.1 point

I asked at the garden center FAQ and "lice" is looked at as "aphids" here. Possibly a European term for the same insect? When I had to deal with my girls coming home from first grade with a "lice infestation" in their hair I didn't see it as "aphids." In fact, I also had an infestation of aphids on my indoor succulents a few years ago. Oh, I just found it. The government of Canada has the answer: Plant lice = aphids1 point

Pssttttttt..... I have a template for Canada with the individual provinces on it. It is still available at The Lily Pad. The designer also did one for the US and I used it for a layout I did in April documenting every state I have visited in the first 68 years of my life. Since I can now start working on my travel dreams, I will continue to fill it in the next few years.1 point

We also are heading back into to rain next week. Should be sunny and in the high 20's (Celcius) by now. the sun really helped my plants sprout up.1 point

Julie very nice! Maybe you can ask Carole for a demonstration of the PaintSplashMask script in the next Q&A. I think if you have some problems with it, there probably will be others too that like to see it in use. Those demos help so much in understanding the way a script works.1 point

Thank you Susan, at the moment I tend to use soft colors instead of very bright ones. By the way we had a couple of summer days but tomorrow the weather is changing to rainy and cold days again...... I used this week's good weather to take a lot of photos from the plants on my little patio for future use. The plants were so happy with the sun, as we were.1 point

me too. Echo is a grey tabby and Zeppelin (older now and does really wander anymore) is a black fuzzy long hair dude. My black cat (Sumi) is in love with Echo, so you can imagine her surprise at him attacking the window screen (he's actually a chicken and make all these noises if a different cat comes into the 'hood). we usually head out the door to stop the meeting. They have a Chow named Jasper, barely ever hear him bark.1 point

What you do, Ann, is what a friend of mine on a farm does. She is 85 and keeps saving feral (barn) cats, feeding them, then one by one taking them to be neutred/spayed to keep the population down. I help by doing some of the driving and buying food and treats. I would love to take one or two (since I lost my kitty last summer), but I have my hands (and budget) full with three dogs (2 older). Hats off to your big ๐งก!1 point

Before the month ends, I wanted to get something done for the Sketch Challenge. Only the pic is mine. Background paper is from ET Designs; mask is called "watery" from Katie Pertiet. I wanted to use the CassPaintSplash mask, but I had too much trouble adjusting it for the photo. Other elements and things from my stash or online clipart. We have dubbed out get-togethers at our friends' pool as Dip 'n Sip days.1 point

on this topic, I'm involved with TNR which is Trap/Neuter/Release of stray community cats that can never live indoors. When teaching kittens (who are able to be domesticated when they're young) to use a litter box, it is recommended to first use organic potting soil, which is similar to being outdoors. I know most cats prefer to be clean and I wonder if your local cat would use a litter pan instead of the garden if it had garden soil in it? They tend to prefer the confined space, which is why they love kids' sandboxes, too. You could add sand to it, and that might even be better and keep the cat out of your garden. Just slowly nudge it away a little further every day and before you know it your garden will be cat-free!๐ฝ1 point

This is great. All those cool details you added. I especially like those 3 cutout lines near the bottom. So clever. (BTW, I've learned to live with some "weeds", easier than pulling them over and over. A garden that is too manicured doesn't attract enough insects. (That's my rationalization.)1 point

Here the sketch I did. Pretty much followed the sketch. The three photos are mine (one was extracted- yellow dandelion). The little tag was a vector shape I made in the first Vector Workshop. I made frame by promoting the background layer and gave them a bevel. the lines below the tag are the effect>cutout and i used a vector ellipse shape to have tapered ends. It's the first time I made something I could use "Selection from Vector Object". The background paper is a photo I did of dandelion seeds on a black background. I first did negative image, then used a blend mode, then I think I used HSL and reduced the opacity or something like that. the bottom tiling is a CASS punch (cass-Edge12), then a small inner bevel and small shadow which made it stand out more. Fonts used are Adorn Copperplate on the tag and Amanda Sunshine for the quote. Both from Creative Fabrica. My text tool was acting very strangely today. I couldnt move it or resize it, it would just jump back to where it was. Also I used cass-screwheads picture tube for the screw on the tag. I'm not sure about the quote. I couldnt find any color that showed up well against the busy background. I tried the paint behind technique but I did a dismal job at it so I used a layer style so the quote would at least be readable.1 point

After finishing with the Vector Workshop I took a pause because we had such nice weather for a change. This was the first time this year we could sit outside in the evening, much welcome after all that terrible rain. But after a few days I wanted to see what the Argyle-2 script which I won is doing. I love it, it gives so many options qua colors that can be matched to a project. Of course I wanted to use it in a project and I took the Sketch and incorporated not only the argyle tiles but the photo corners freebie by Carole too. Those use the blogtrain color palette for this month and I have the freebie kits from Jessica Dunn and Marissa Lerin where all the elements are from. I don't know if it is clear in this reseized version but the background has a texture. The fonts are Crocus Monogram and Georgia and the photo is by me as usual.1 point

For the Bingo I went with the 5th vertical row: Snowflake, Paperclip, License plate, Ticket, Glitter gel. I already had created a California license plate for my photo album and only had to change the text on it. A have several paperclips done before and of course the ticket was done with my own script (I had never thought that I would use that so much). Snowflake and glitter gel were done with tutorials, but for the glitter gel I used a preset shape instead of drawing it by hand; I'm terrible at drawing! As a starting point for the layout I used the template Lab 14-02.1 point

I went with the second horizontal row. File tab, Arrow paper, Halftone brush, Fuffy cloud, paperclip. I created a different paperclip, 2 circles with a line joining the two circles at the top. I had already created a halftone brush, which was in my brushes folder. Same goes for the File tab, and fluffy cloud, I had templates for them all. I had to create the arrow paper though. I didn't really know what to do with the cloud, so I created a sprayed effect using a grey coloured watercolur brush. The cloud is actually a rain cloud. Carole's lace font, and canvas patch I had in my stash.1 point

I'm going to follow Mary's lead on this challenge. This little beauty showed up this morning, he immediately reminded me of Ann, and the page which she posted. Last Autumn I had dozens of them, but then they weren't in their Spring attire. A handsome Spring male Myrtle Warbler. The tools that you would use to remove glare in glasses can also be used in other projects, which is what I did here. I used the clone tool to clone the bird to open grassy space in the main photo. I also cloned out the bird poop on the wood. I promoted to a new layer. Created a mask to remove any details that I had missed. Copied a section of the grass area, paste as a new image. Edited the background. Copy and paste the bird onto the edited grass. I decided to frame it. I have included the original photo which eables you to see what I did.1 point
