  1. This is a special gift to your son-in-law, and it will be something Xavier will love to see when he gets older to understand more. Beautiful work! The photos are great with the techniques you used, but for me, the journaling is what stands out... So, so creative! I like the size you used (8x8), and I have been thinking of starting to scrap in a different size than 12x12 so it will be easier to have it printed. In one newsletter, Lynn Grieveson, a designer from The Lilypad, mentioned she used to print 10x10 at Persnickety and then at Shutterfly, but the former discontinued the size, and the latter had to start charging too much for international deliveries... She lives in New Zealand. Now, she prints 8x10 (i.e., portrait orientation), which is close to letter size A4, but she still sells her designs in 12x12 format. Since then, I have been thinking of changing it, too; I haven't yet decided which size.

  2. I got the printed book for my son-in-law yesterday. I am very happy with the result and the quality I got from Staples. Here is the "reveal".

  4. Cristina, I thought of this topic too but couldn't decide on which size to use. So, I use different sizes depending on the use I want. If it is only for here in the Campus then it doesn't matter. On the other hand if I want to print at home, mostly for cards, I use a size that my printer can handle. When I want it printed at a printing service I use the sizes they prefer.

  6. This beautiful book will be read over and over. Pete's daughter in law prints off the photos they have taken as a family in a simple soft cover book monthly ( she has some sort of subscription she uploads to with a set quantity of pictures) and her two young children love to go through them over and over and over. Your magnificent creation is much more elaborate and a consistent story line that Xavier will learn to read from as well! Your talent shines as glossy as those pages! Priceless. Thanks for sharing with us.

  7. That's a beautiful gesture Fiona. And if tears are shed it will be tear of love for their mother. I think they will be very happy and grateful for your thoughtful present.

  8. A lovely present Carole and I like the consistency in the style of the photos. I have made a photobook as a present this Christmas for my husband and his brothers of memories of their late mother. We have so many photos of her so it is nice to have one record of the best of them. The skills I have been learning at the Campus, for which I am grateful, have been put into practice. I just hope the photobook doesn't upset them at Christmas time.

  12. Carole, Kudos to you! The whole book is fantastic. I love the photographs, nothing like a man who pays so much attention to his children. Not all are that lucky. I'm sure the family will cherish this forever. Thanks for sharing this very personal gift. Happy Holidays to you and yours.

  14. I would assume that most print shops have a blank option for most of their products. It just makes sense.

  15. The format is not the easiest to get published on platforms like Amazon (like my other books), and I am not sure he would want his photos published further. In his line of work, it is not "safe" so to speak. However, I was thinking that maybe someone would want a SIMILAR book with their photos. However, since every photo has to be edited for the out-of-bound effect, that would vary from photo to photo so it is not like I could sell a template to Staples for example. But yes, I was also wondering if anyone else would have wanted a book of that sort, if/how I could offer it. The text would also have to change based on the photos. We'll see. Maybe I will get some requests and if so, I'll go from there.

  16. Online, they have a few pre-made templates, but I chose to start from scratch so it was just a blank canvas. I had each image sized to 2400x2400 pixels (8x8 inches) and just imported them one by one. The text was also saved on a 2400x2400 canvas. I didn't really have many other options though, but I was able to start with the hard-cover (I think there is a softcover option). Also, it might not show much on the video, because I had forgotten about it, but the title is also on the side of the book. It is not very thick so quite subtle! So that was the process for Staples. I think it might be different for different services. I could have gone with Shutterfly or others, but at this time of year, I was afraid it would take longer.

  17. What a wonderful gift. I got tears. You did an awesome job with the photos and the story. I think you should get it published for libraries and such. Can't wait to see "Dad's" reaction.

  19. That's so beautiful and touching. As you said he is reserved and might not cry, but I sure did. Thank you for sharing such a personal gift. I would love to know about the ordering process. Do you choose the type of book (binding style, soft or hard cover, matte or glossy etc) and the type of paper and is it templates you put your layouts into?

  22. Impressive, Carole! I'm sure that will be a hit with the whole family. I think your idea of the watercolor strokes for the background is perfect. I see Staples did an excellent job for you, too. I'm pleased with my calendar for Jackie. Glossy is the way to go!

  25. It is so nice when the work you put in turns out to be so fantastic! I know that feeling when you get a book/album printed and it turns out just as you wanted it to be, especially when it is such a precious gift. It will be great to see their faces when daddy opens his present. Enjoy!!!!

  27. The font is Brush Script MT. The graphics were downloads from C F. The Cookies Alpha is of course the Christmas Cookie Alpha from Cassel. The other Alpha is one I downloaded a long time ago from who knows where.

  28. I had already used the cookies for the Christmas challenge, so I used the cookies for a birthday, not intended as a card to print but to use as a digital image to wish a birthday, for example on Facebook or somewhere else. I'm not sure the shadows are okay, but I had fun all evening with making this. Cookie Monster and his party hat are from PNGwing, the balloons are freebies, but I can't remember where I got them The Alphas are from digidelights blogspot com

  29. I've had this Christmas/Hanukkah cartoon for a while and don't know where it came from other than on the internet. The background is from the greenery in the art. Added a selection frame with inner bevel.
