Magazine Workshop 2025

I did my magazine cover.   It looks like it is cut off.  Here's hoping once I submit it the photo, frame and everything else magically is all present.

@Cristina Since it is not your first go around, it might make it easier for you, even if you use Affinity.

@Jacques I am looking forward to all the photos you will share. I remember that event reported on the news and it was impressive.

@Jen Brown As a sewer myself, I will really enjoy looking at your pages.

@Anja Pelzer At first, I thought it would be a Canadian beaver! I bet that blue line will change color later in the workshop.

@Anne Lamp That is such a colorful cover! 

@Rene Marker As you are comfortable with PSP, these pages will be very quick to make (and probably just as simple with Affinity).

@Art Kuiper That is a great theme to showcase!

@Ann Seeber Looking forward to seeing his photos!

@Lynda DiGregor Maybe you can use one as a front cover, and the other as a back cover!

@Donna Sillia We will be travelling with you!

@Corrie Kinkel We will be visiting the park without too much walking. That suits me well! I have often seen a "special edition" seal on various magazines. You could make something with a symmetric shape and lots of points.

@Clarine That will be a great magazine. I think you offset the photo to match the frame, instead of the edge of the page. That explains the grey edge. You could also move the title upward a bit so it does not overlap that frame.

@Gerry Landreth Your title is a bit hard to read, but it does fit the theme if it is RANDOM! 🙂

I would like to create another album myself. I am not sure which photos I would use as I don't have many on a single theme. Since those templates are so fast to use, I should be able to catch up, even if I start later.

I'm doing this workshop in Affinity.  I decided to use some photos of my trip to Ireland in September 2023, so while I really have no idea of exactly what theme I will use, I am using this as a starting point.  So, at this stage, I think my theme will be Immigration, but who knows if that will change or not.

Day 1 Cover
In December I travelled a few hours away to a place that is so different from where I live.
It is a hot, dry area in the centre of the south of the South Island, only 3 hours away.
I was up there this past weekend, too.

My first page shows a photograph of a wonderful, old stone cottage that sits beside, what used to be, an orchard.

I've been there (I'm originally from BC, fraser valley.  Will I see Bridal Falls from Chilliwack perhaps?  - I lived there until I moved to Alberta in 2013.

Here's my cover.  I'm still deciding what to do on the right side.  It will have what's in the issue but the background is still up in the air, as are whether I'll use the frames. I like what others have done with the frames so I'll play around and see.  My calendar will be about collections of oddities.  The color of the title may change but so far I kind of like the black and maybe even the white on the right.  Of course the white will not show the edge of the layout, but you get the picture I'm sure.

I love this, the oddity you photographed is wonderful and so clean and clear, Susan. I feel like if I reached out I could touch it!

Decided to use PSP for this cover.  I hope to use Affinity for some of the magazine pages.  My time is a little short at the moment because my husband is back in hospital again having another operation.  This is due to his fall from the ceiling almost 5 months ago.  It has not been a good time for either one of us but never mind, I enjoy my spare time playing with my photo programs.  This cover is of one of my beautiful little fur babies. Such a little joy he was in our life.

Yes and No. Lol

Yes, because the first 3 layouts have been chosen and are done.   No, because I'll recreate the layouts in Affinity and tweak them a bit, and  I don't know the program well yet.

But that's why it's fun!

That would be great!  If you don't have many photos of a single theme, your magazine could also be Random, like Gerry, or about Curiosities.

Checking online, I saw a Curiosities and Oddities Magazine.

I'm in. Not sure what my theme will be. Been a while since I posted anything, or used PSP, so I will feel like a newbie. This year I feel it will be a more creative year using PSP and quite fancy trying out Affinity. So we shall see. Just looked at everyone's postings, I need to catch up with my first page. Looking good everyone.

Great to see what has been posted so far! The different themes make it even more enjoyable.

My theme is a business leisure trip we took in 2023; some photos are mine, and others are from the Internet.

Here is Day 1 - Cover.

The former Magazine Publisher "closed", so I went with a "new one" and changed the title. 🙂 

 When I first created the cover in 2023,  I was inspired by a Travel Magazine I saw online. The tweaks are now based on the same cover.

The bar code was created in PSP, following Carole's tutorial, and was already part of the 2023 PSP layout.

Fonts: Britannic Bold - Courier New - Brock Script - Blokletters Potlood.

It looks a lot like the Chihuly pieces. I have visited the Chihuly glasshouse and gardens at Seattle a couple of years ago, it was a magical experience. I even thought of them as a topic for this workshop but decided on Yosemite

@Corrie Kinkel What exactly do you mean with something with a symmetric shape and lots of points? I can't seam to visualize this.

All the best for your husband and yes it can be a good thing to use some of your spare time to do something else that brings you joy.
