Song-Challenge.jpg

Once a week, there is a radio show that has been on for many years. It is called Vinyl Tap. It is 2 hours of songs that are picked around a particular theme. Sometimes, it has to do with a word, sometimes, a topic, sometimes it is another particularity (like "unlikely duets").

Winter is still in full swing, and what better way to embrace the season than with a song-inspired scrapbook page? For this challenge, use a song title or lyrics that include the words COLD, FREEZE, or SNOW. Whether it's a chilly love song, a frosty ballad, or a wintry classic, let music set the tone for your page!

Here are some song ideas to get you started:
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! – Frank Sinatra
Do You Want to Build a Snowman? – Frozen (Disney)
Baby, It's Cold Outside – Dean Martin
A Hazy Shade of Winter – Simon & Garfunkel

Are you up to the challenge?

Years ago, I listened to Vinyl Tap. A friend in another town also listened. We considered it to be listening together and would talk about it later, in the days before social media.

This is my take on the challenge. Any song sung by Ella Fitzgerald is one I love.

Many of the winter elements come from Jessica Dunne mini kits that were free.

Such pretty colours! And some lovely elements blended in. Really a good one, Anja.

I  wanted to create a page that would depict the lyrics and the  tune of this song.  Enya is one of my all time favourites, I have all of her CDs. I created snow, frosted window (which is mentioned in the lyrics), wavy paper. I kept it minimalistic.  The photo is one I took 2 days ago.

How I remember sleepless nights
When we would read by candlelight,
And on the windowpane outside
A new world made of snow
A million feathers falling down,
A million stars that touch the ground,
So many secrets to be found
Amid the falling snow.

I made a page, a few years ago, with photos of an ice wall that appeared in our town, on the beach. This happened at the same time as the Winter Canada Games, in 2003. Since it was quite a sight, several bus trips were organized to see it. My boys did climb on it before warnings were put in place to prevent that as it would be dangerous.

I will look for videos of that ice "crawling" on the beach. It was quite a sight!

@Sue Thomas That is so beautiful. Thank you for giving us the words to the song - so beautiful - I lived for 4 years in upper Michigan (my high school years) and we definitely had much snow - I loved it - the first snowfall is so wonderful - the sound of silence!

@Cassel Love your remembrance of a fun time locally. Younguns do love the challenges. Imagine - an ice wall! the kids think that is something built just for them! What's not to like???

I appreciate your impactful comment. Ambience, is the word I was trying to achieve using one of my photos.

A million feathers falling down,
A million stars that touch the ground,
So many secrets to be found
Amid the falling snow.
Maybe I am falling down.
Tell me should I touch the ground?
Maybe I won't make a sound
In the darkness all around.
The silence of a winter's night
Brings memories I hold inside,
Remembering a blue moonlight
Upon the fallen snow.
Maybe I am falling down.
Tell me should I touch the ground?
Maybe I won't make a sound
In the darkness all around.
I close my window to the night.
I leave the sky her tears of white.
And all is lit by candlelight
Amid the falling snow.
And all is lit by candlelight
Amid the falling snow.

Such a lovely song and music! I didn't know the singer and will certainly search for more songs by her.

I chose A Winter's Tale by Freddie Mercury and Queen, recorded just prior to his death. The background is a winter photo from Beacon, NY, by Sforza. The font is Bahnschrift. The text on the photo reads: "A Winter's Tale" is a song by Queen, from the album Made in Heaven, released in 1995 after Freddie Mercury's death in 1991. It was written after the Innuendo sessions, inspired as Mercury was staring out the windows of his apartment, in Montreux, Switzerland. The song has a psychedelic, dreamy feel, and describes what Mercury saw outside the windows. Mercury wrote and composed the song, and also performed the vocals and keyboards (although the track is credited to Queen). In the 1995 documentary Queen: Champions of the World, it was stated that this was, if not the first, then an extremely rare style of recording for Mercury, as it was all performed in one take live in the studio. It was stated in the film that Mercury had always insisted upon music being completed prior to the vocal arrangement beginning, but acknowledged that he had little time left and there was not enough time to work on it differently. The song was released as the second single from the album. In the UK the single was also available in a special limited edition green paper CD case which resembled Christmas wrapping.

I got to know Enya years ago, when the song "Only Time" was playing a lot on the radio. I like her very much.

I read your comment a while ago, then kept thinking about it. If you like Enya's music you might also enjoy Loreena McKennitt who is quite similar. I used to listen to both of them years ago. I am rediscovering them now since I can't have on radio or TV without being bombarded by events that are too disturbing. My soul needs soothing these days.

I'm watching tutorials in the campus to avoid too much bombardment.  I completely agree with you regarding soothing our souls.  Thankfully spring is coming and we can get outside and listen to nature, nature is always honest and real.

Julie, I'm also carefully choosing what I see on TV nowadays. To watch the news is sometimes nerve-wracking.

And don't you find it all surreal?  Like it's some kind of joke or movie we don't realize we are participating in.  If this was someone scripting a movie, no one would believe it.  Good music, nature, good company and Campus tutorials will keep us sane in a world where the insane rule.

also, a quick question: is FOX network a joke?  Are they want-to-be actors or actual news reporters?

Not a joke. Many award winning news reporters on the channel. I prefer their news programs during the day but avoid the evening programs because they are the political commentary shows that are definitely biased. The 7pm to 10pm shows are not hosted by news reporters/journalists although one is a lawyer that once clerked in the US Supreme Court.

I've been watching NewsNation for a while now. They are more middle of the road than other stations. I know when I agree with some things they say and disagree with others, I'm in the right place.

I tune into my cable provider, Spectrum's News 1 at 5pm when I retire from my desktop. Their coverage is a lot of NYC local + national news and their newsreaders seem unbiased. At 6:30 I switch to ABC to catch World News Tonight with David Muir which segues into "Jeopardy!" which is a lifetime fav. of mine. I do avoid Fox, though I hear they are, in some cases, starting to voice real news instead of extreme political "spin."

The channels we have here differ from those over there, but the news travels fast. 😞
