Cassel Posted May 14, 2022 Posted May 14, 2022 Learning scrapbooking is often done with practice, looking around for inspiration, and trying to recreate projects we admire. Sometimes, we can be inspired by finished projects, but sometimes, we also have to use our imagination to interpret something. This challenge will give you an opportunity to envision something from a "boring" base, and you will have to imagine the end result differently. The sketch is only a written idea, and you can fly with it, modify it, and customize it to fit your vision, your photos, your supplies, etc. And if you want more information on using sketches, check out this article.
Guest Guest Posted May 15, 2022 Posted May 15, 2022 Here is my very first sketch. Did I understand correctly - that we would just scratch the outline of where anything is going, we wouldn't start filling them at this point and we wouldn't be gluing anything ... just scratching
Cassel Posted May 15, 2022 Author Posted May 15, 2022 Pirkko, a SKETCH is an idea for creating a page. A SKETCH challenge is an opportunity to "replicate" that format in your project. For example, in this week's challenge, you would create a project using four rectangular photos, you would put the title between two photos, and you would have some layered paper that would extend on one side. What you did is provide a brand new sketch (although maybe someone would want to use it too).
Guest Guest Posted May 15, 2022 Posted May 15, 2022 ... and that is not a template? - a bit confusing when it looks like a template
Cassel Posted May 15, 2022 Author Posted May 15, 2022 The TEMPLATES have layers that you can "clip to". It is usually the correct size. The SKETCHES are just a written representation of an arrangement. No layer. Typically not full-size either. It is like if you were to draw in a notebook for ideas you pick and then, using that idea, you create your own project. There is a link in the first post to a blog article explaining all that.
Rene Marker Posted May 15, 2022 Posted May 15, 2022 I decided to use this sketch to document the trade-in of my little purple car. Papers and elements are from a kit by BellaGypsy called Let It Go (available at The LilyPad digital store). The "Goodbye" is a journal card from a Project Mouse Kit "See Ya Real Soon" also available at The LilyPad. Font is Yanks Hand which I use on every layout for journaling. I also used a retired background mask element from Scrapping With Liz on the plaid paper.
Sharla Posted May 16, 2022 Posted May 16, 2022 Thanks for this challenge Carole. I really like the idea of Sketches - they seem less restrictive than templates (to me). I used bits from 3 kits - coastal print kit, thankful harvest, and april scraps all from digitalscrapbook. The photos are mine and link to a day out back in 2012. Your article 'Templates or sketches?' has an image of a book of 500 Scrapbooking sketches which sadly links to an error page.
Cassel Posted May 16, 2022 Author Posted May 16, 2022 Sharla, you are correct about that book. I tried to figure out where it can be purchased now, but all my email inquiries have returned nothing. Their contact email is no longer supported. If anything, I wish I could distribute it myself, but I certainly don't want to get in trouble, legally. I'll edit the post to remove the link until I can figure out something about the book. Thanks for pointing it out.
Lynda DiGregor Posted May 16, 2022 Posted May 16, 2022 I just stuck to the supplied sketch template. I used textures ,color and my photos. The font is called Choco Matcha Solid.
Lynda DiGregor Posted May 16, 2022 Posted May 16, 2022 Hey Carole, I did a search for Jennifer Gormly on Facebook and only found one. I left her a message asking if she is the author of the book in question and if so, what happened. Hopefully it is her and she will respond. Let you know what happens.
Cassel Posted May 16, 2022 Author Posted May 16, 2022 Lynda, I had found several of the same name so I didn't try to reach "her" that way. But if you let me know, it would be great.
Sue Thomas Posted May 16, 2022 Posted May 16, 2022 Yesterday I was raking the last of the flower beds of leaves, twigs and dead flowers, when I disturbed a large colony of deer mice. Of course I had to run for the camera, I managed a few decent shots, as they scurried frantically for cover. Aren't they all adorable! I modified the layout to suit the photos. I went with rounds, scallops and lines with my background paper and elements. Hence the Chevron pattern, word in a letter, scalloped label, and rounded arrow, all created by myself.
Mary Solaas Posted May 16, 2022 Posted May 16, 2022 Sue: Love your rodent pictures and layout. Recognize the elements as part of the labs! Lynda, Sharla: beautiful pics and layouts. Rene: Hard to give up the old car which has served us so well.
Sue Thomas Posted May 16, 2022 Posted May 16, 2022 Mary, thank you. The lab and creative scrap has always been a favourite of mine.
Michele Posted May 17, 2022 Posted May 17, 2022 They are adorable, Sue. I have a question, though. Isn't your camera physically attached to your body at this point? :D
Sue Thomas Posted May 17, 2022 Posted May 17, 2022 Michele, you would think so, wouldn't you! hahaha It's never to far away when it's not physically on my person. Even when riding or kayaking I have my smaller (suitable for underwater shots) camera with me, you never know when an opportunity arises for a photo shoot. :-)
Cassel Posted May 17, 2022 Author Posted May 17, 2022 Pirkko, it looks like windows with that photo in the background! Lovely.
Jodi Bayer Posted May 18, 2022 Posted May 18, 2022 I posted the website contact email below (Post # 76756). I replied to the end of the thread instead of directly to this post. Sorry about that. I don't think too well before coffee. The email address is ask@500scrapbookingsketches.com
Julie Magerka Posted May 18, 2022 Posted May 18, 2022 Not sure I followed the "spirit" of the challenge, but I wanted to jump in. Some lovely ones here already! All the variations are just so fascinating.
