Cassel Posted March 1 Posted March 1 In March, our monthly theme is INSECTS. Insects are everywhere! From the tiniest ants to the most colorful butterflies, they play an important role in nature. Some are helpful, like bees that pollinate flowers, while others can be pests, like mosquitoes and aphids. There are insects with wings, some that crawl, and even a few that glow in the dark! Let's find words starting with each letter of the alphabet that relate to anything about insects—types of insects, their body parts, their habitats, or even actions they do. I'm sure we’ll uncover a fascinating variety! If we get stuck on one letter, we can skip it after 24 hours, sound good? Let's get started!
Anne Lamp Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Grasshopper on windshield. Photo taken several years ago. I think I put a towel inside on the dashboard of the car to get a clearer picture. The shadow in the picture was not created, it was actually on the glass. 3

What you have here is a Katydid, and not a grasshopper. Katydids are in the suborder Ensifera, while hoppers are in the suborder caerlifera. The best way to tell them apart is that Katydids have the longest of antennae. Edited March 3 by Sue Thomas 1 1
Ann Seeber Posted March 3 Posted March 3 (edited) S = Silverfish / Firebrats Domestic species such as silverfish and firebrats may cause extensive damage to household goods. They often feed on wallpaper paste, bookbindings, and the starch sizing of some textiles. Cardboard and other paper products may also be damaged. The species is particularly long lived, some as much as 6 years. Edited March 3 by Ann Seeber 1 1
