Help! for the first time since JASC, I can't see PSP files in Windows Explorer!

Recommended Posts

I upgraded my computer and it's been awful. I now have Windows 11, and everything takes an extra step.  Print screen used to be click and then control V to paste in to PSP, now it's so much slower! and there is another click in there to crop the region you want or else you wait longer for the whole screen.

But the thing I cannot live with are the thumbnails in Explorer (the old file manager) not showing up!  Is there a workaround for this?

I don't have a specific answer to that since I still use Windows 10.

However, there is a thread in the PSP User-to-user forum that you can check here

I don't know if PSP Thumbnail Handler would work with W11.

Try going to uninstall. Instead of clicking on uninstall program, click on repair. That has worked  on occassion in restoring the psp files, to allow you to view them. Saying that I too use Windows 10.

What do you see when you click on "View"?

I don't know what to tell you because my pspimage files show just fine in Win11. Always have.

I'm using Windows 11 Home, Version 23H2. I'm waiting to install Version 24H2 when my IT friend can do it.

I have Windows 11 and updated, we (husband and I) always update immediately. Most of my pspimage files visible but for unknown reason there are a couple not showing up, but like Ann said under view are a lot of settings and you need to have them set to thumbnails. I once struggled with this too, but now it is fine, however sometimes after an update I have to set the view to thumbnails again, but that is just one click.

@René MarkerRene, I see in the photo that you also have those Corel logos on your pictures. I experience that as a nuisance rather than a bit reviving. So if I save as jpeg these days, I don't have that.

It doesn't bother me.

Editing to add that those are my pspimage files. My printing jpg files are saved in different folders and my 600x600 size files are in another folder. I keep them separate. I like having that logo on them. I've noticed that on the native file for Affinity (afphoto), I get the Affinity logo. If I start saving both of those types of files in the same working folder, it will be very handy to have the logo on them.

Sue Thomas, would that be uninstall-but-don’t -uninstall PSP? Surely not Windows Explorer?

Ann, I went through all of view, I checked and unchecked everything, even “options” and “advanced”. Normally I have it on “view extra large thumbnails” because I can’t see as well as I used to, and I'm having trouble getting really good readers. (Eye glasses for reading).  The cheap ones won’t do it for me any more.

Rene, this is how it’s always been for me, too! They always showed up.

One thing I did and I might have to undo it  is I installed “sage” to see photoshop thumbnails. I might uninstall that to see if it brings back psp.

But  first I’ll wait to hear back from Sue and then try Carole’s link. The website looks a little dodgy, but it is CNET approved, so I’m going to try it. Janette, I’ll let you know.

Thanks, everybody! I’m having way more issues on all things, BTW.  Winzip takes two extra clicks to unzip. Print screen, I don’t even know what is up with that, just that it is twice as hard and four times longer than print screen, flip to PSP, control+V Voila!  Just everything in my workflow has become more complex, and therefore takes more time.

On that Affinity, I already didn’t like that it didn’t have some of my most favorite things from PSP - shortcut keys and other things, but the thing that sent me over the edge is when it pasted new layers in the corner!  Once I saw it pasted in the corner, I decided it was not for me. I use the paste command as the absolute middle way too often. It’s how I make borders & frames. Circle rims, a bunch of stuff.

Carole, what about some rudimentary things like changing color, size, and raster-to-vector in Corel Draw?  I could use a class on the very basics! I (like probably most the people reading this) bought it at Hungry Bundle, so I own it, but it’s pretty hard for me to use.  What if I wanted a vector with a stroke?  Or a vector with colors to match my kit instead of black? Or a vector flower where the petals in front are a little lighter than colors in back?  Or vector brushes that look a little wobbly instead of vector-perfect.?  Will it accept/import/use Illustrator or procreate brushes?  Well, that’s just today’s questions..I have a bunch more that could fill a class! . Like when I have some old Dover B&W images I want to fill with color, but they don’t quite close. Is there a thing that will “close path”? Plus they are in B&W so the color stuff doesn’t even show up on the menu! (I think).

What do you mean "pasted new layers in the corner"?

I don't use File/Place or File/Open to copy and paste to get papers and elements on my canvas. I use Drag and Drop and I found with drag and drop wherever my cursor is on the canvas when I do the drop is where the item (element or paper) is placed on the canvas. So if your cursor is in the corner, that is where the item will be placed. To help me with that, I place 2 guides on the canvas that intersect in the middle and when I drag/drop I put my cursor as close to that intersection as possible. For elements, it is no problem to then move them to where I want them on the canvas. For papers, they may be off a little but I have put the 6 Align commands on the toolbar at the top. I then hit "align middle" and "align center" and the paper is where it should be.

Yes PSP.  Dont select  uninstall, but select repair. I reffered to PSP as a program. Windows is an operating system and not a program.

What got me confused is that there is *no* repair for Paint Shop Pro or other programs.  Affinity is the one program that at least has another choice, although it's not repair. So I thought, "Maybe she meant Windows, but that's not a program. Well, maybe it is in her country? But messing around with Windows sounds dodgy, so maybe I'd better to ask before messing with it."

When you paste into affinity it goes to the upper left corner, on the page edge. When you paste in PSP with Control + V or Control +C, my quickie left-handed shortcut keys, it pastes in the exact middle.  I need that exact middle so many times, and although I'm using those guides more and more, I don't routinely use them as I open every image.  (I can see why you might do that with a LO, but I am working with individual layered images.)

I might have to start doing that drag & drop, though, because while I used to open with a right click in Windows Explorer, that right click now opens a dialogue box where I have to choose from all the programs that might possible open it including all three Affinities.  Another example of Windows 11 making things harder and taking longer to do anything.

I don't know if it would work but in the past, I have run the .exe installation file again, and that is when I would get the option to repair.

I've never done a copy/paste when opening things in all the years I've used PSP so I didn't realize it did that. I drag/drop from the old program Picasa 3. Still bitter that Google shut that program down. I have 3 or 4 copies of the installation exe file so I can have it on any computer.

@Cassel do you know if there is a way to have to guides automatically when you open a new blank canvas?

No, there isn't anything yet. But you can use the Quick-guide script to get the guides in the center and on the edges in one click.

It is free.

Maybe a script can be coded to replace (or add) the Open... command and open it with the guides? I can look into it

I meant in Affinity! Sorry about that. I don't use guides much in PSP but because of the drag/drop issue in Affinity I put 2 guides that intersect in the middle of the canvas so that when I drag/drop a paper, I can try to get it centered since it drops it where the cursor is. Don't have that issue in PSP. I do have the Guiding Lines and Quick Guides scripts for when I do need guidelines in PSP. Actually, your Quick Guides script is what I set in Affinity.

In Affinity, if you set the Snapping, you would get the "fleeting" guides when you place the papers in the center. However, I find that by using the Place command for paper is not that accurate when using those guides (I might shake a tiny bit), and for papers, i would have to rasterize it before doing any trimming (which is more frequent with papers than elements). So, typically, I will PLACE elements, and I will Copy/Paste papers.

But that is just me.

I have snapping set but don't get those fleeting guides when I place papers in the center. I also do not use Place just as I don't use File/Open in PSP. I work with Picasa open on my 2nd screen and have all the elements and papers right there. So it is much easier to drag/drop. Papers are the ones that always need centered in Affinity, elements don't matter. Guess I'll just keep using Align Center and Align Middle after dropping the paper.

To each his own 😉

@Cassel YES - how about some instruction in Corel Draw! That's the next program I would like some instruction in. I really like the Corel stuff (including their word processor - I have it as well as Microsoft's Word).

Oh... CorelDRAW is something i only use when I need to convert .eps files, and even though I got a "private" lesson from Roger Wambolt, and he gave me a copy of his book, I never did anything with it. I think I will have to concentrate on Affinity for now.
