My text tool is not working correctly (was fine all day Saturday).  In the object layer the "T" is encases in a box like it's for a selection.  However I dont have a selection and I cant move the text.  it bounces right back.  If I duplicate the text it makes a duplicate but moves it to one side or the other.  I also saw a box for repeating the text and I clicked on it no knowing what it was trying to fix the other issue and now I cant get it to stop using the same word.  Also, the white check mark is often greyed out as is the Create on a Vector box.  I'm working in 2023, had same issue in2022.  did a browser cache dump, cleaned up all the hard drives, dumped temp files. shut down and restarted PSP and also the computer.  What did i do wrong?  I am leaving for work and will be home later to see if there is a fix for this.

What you see as the bounding box around the text is common. It has nothing to do with a selection. If you change tool, it would disappear, and when you get back to the Text tool, it would reappear. The fact that you cannot move it is an obvious bug. I have experienced it often myself. I found two solutions that might work (they don't always work).

- activate another tool and come back to the Text tool - that is the easiest way, and it might work half of the time.

- save your work and restart your PSP - this is more annoying but typically, it will solve the issue.

Give those a try and see how it goes. Make sure you let us know.

One thought: I also would save my work and do a restart BUT I would save it with a modifier on the name so I could always go back to the original, if needed.

I tried the ideas you both gave me, but with no success.  A few weird things came up too.  When i restarted PSP both the stroke and fill boxes in the materials pallet had a checkerboard.  I've never seen that before.  And when I opened the pspimage there is a vector layer, but has no object layer, no little arrow either, to indicate you can open it to see the object layer.    I've been gone over 8 hours with the computer turned off and still the same results.  It doesnt matter if I change tools or not.  Its strange because Saturday everything was fine.  could the layout itself be corrupted?

Addendum:  I started from the base template that I use for the Photo Challenge and copied my photo in and then used the same font and it worked ( I had wondered if it was the font).  I think the 3 images I was working on got corrupted.  A weird thing too was that the font wasn't showing up in the drop down list (this is after I got home from work) but was activated in Font Base.  So I deactivated it and reactivated it and I could move the font around again (wonder if Font Base is the culprit).  Now when I use a font the word "lock" shows up, because I stupidly clicked on the remember text button, not knowing what it was.  Oh well, at least I can use text again.  And I had a normal T in the object layer not the weird T with a box around it.

Thank you Carole and Ann for you help.  Now I can go watch some tutorials and destress myself.  It's good to know that it's a known bug.  My next idea was going to be saving with a different name at each step in hopes of seeing which step made it go haywire.  I'm leaning toward clicking too fast and Font Base and PSP got confused.  It did freeze up once and I had to do cntrl -alt-delete, which leads me to think I was clicking to make it work and it got confused.

Susan, I had no idea what might have caused this issue, but I imagine how lost we feel dealing with this.

When my PSP starts acting up and doing things I don't know how to fix, I reset it to factory default settings.

Thank you, I remember Carole once said the same and I have written those instructions on the first page of the paper map I keep for important PSP things

Something else that happens, on occasion, with the text tool is that I can't edit it at all, and my cursor disappears when it is over my image. When that happens, sometimes, I can select another tool, and come back, but most of the time, I have to save my work and restart PSP.

I think I will try this in the next couple weeks.  After the next workshop.  I ended up starting from the template I created for the Alphabet Photo Challenge.  it was quick, just add the photo in and do the text.  It worked as normal.  But I think I got some commands that were overlapping each other or that somehow with over clicking or using the key board and using shift but accidently hitting another button at the same time, may have corrupted the file.  Thank you for posting this as I remember something about resetting it but couldnt remember where I saw it.  You have saved me some time in having to search. Thank you.

I just saved it to my desktop and put it beside my PSP icon shortcut.  I know it's got to be from too many clicks and hits two keys at once or something like that.

thank you for mentioning this.  It's good to know all the quirks so I dont spend hours wondering what "I" did wrong.  I have been saving at various steps all the way with layouts, just in case I need to go back to them.  and the Auto preserve comes in handy when forget to save often.  At least I'm only a few steps behind with the auto-preserve files.  I never knew what they were for before and I used to delete them.  Now I keep them, but wonder if I should only keep them until the layout is complete, then delete them.  Any thoughts on that?

Susan I haven't heard you about the repair kit for the '22. and the '23. If you don't have them you can ask Aludo about them I think. If you have multiple PSP numbers on your device Microsoft links them together. They will then also get that problem together. (that's how I experienced it) We once had a survey about how many fonts we have and I remember that you scored very high isn't it Susan? It could well be that it also affects PSP. Translation was done by Google Translate.

might be more clear to you if I show you a pic. You can fin it on the first page of your device . Here it is called  restore Database. Every PSP number has its own restore database.

Usually, a restart is my first option when PSP starts to misbehave. 😄

Susan, I only do this as a last resort.

First, I restart the app. If this doesn’t correct the problem, I will try File>Preferences>Reset Preferences.

Only if none of those solve the issue, do I use SHIFT+START.

It’s great to have these important tips handy, Corrie.

I also have it saved; however, after using it so many times, I already know this specific command by heart.

yes it was mine too.  The weird thing, and why I think the file was corrupted, is that it was doing the same thing in 2022 which I never have a problem with.  That's what got me thinking int was the pspimage I was working on.  when I started over again (the white template I use over and over- Shift D) I no problems.  I think it's because I'm hitting buttons too fast and I think I'm this wiz on the keyboard, and reality is clumsy fingers hitting two keys at once while the shift or alt key is also pressed.  I know the culprit was me, just dont know what I did, or when i did it.  It might be a good idea to monitor it before using the last resort as you described.  I dont relish doing all the customizations I do.

Most of the time, we work without much thought, simply repeating steps we're used to.   When something unusual happens, we often don’t know when or why it occurred.

Yes, after a SHIFT+START, I need to redo all the customizations (since I don’t have a saved workspace) and also change the Files Location.

However, I'm used to doing this for various reasons, having had to do so quite often in the past.

I can sympathize with you, because I do such things all the time, like pressing 2, maybe 3 keys at the same time, even without realizing that I do so and then things go wrong. I always close psp and restart it and most of the time that helps. From my secretary years I could type very quickly and here I learned the hard way to type more slowly. I always think computers are quick and have to accommodate my typing speed; alas they don't all the time!
