New PC

Well I took the plunge and decided to replace my PC with something that will support any challenge that software can throw at it...robust video capability and memory, expandable to 128GB RAM, etc. etc.into the future.  I fully expect this will be the last PC I ever buy. Currently finishing the FULL backup of this one.  Already did the setup and backed up the new one.  In about 2 or 3 hours I'll be starting the migration software that is supposed to move all my software and files from this Windows 10 system to the new Windows 11 machine (seamlessly) and that will probably take a LONG time.  With any luck it will be done in time for me to join you all in the master class tomorrow evening but if not, that will be the reason I didn't make it.

Dan, wat voor merk heb je gekozen? Ik begin er zo langzaam aan te denken. Omdat Windows 10 volgend jaar oktober stopt, moet ik nu al na gaan denken wat ik dan ga doen.

Even if support for Windows 10 ends, it does not mean it will stop working. I still had a computer running Windows 7 several years after it was no longer supported and never had issues.

My husband did that ones. His pc was stil fine, but was not connected with the internet. He played games and did houshold aministration etc.

Dan we undertook this when Windows 11 came on the market and the migration of software and files from 10 to 11 worked completely fine and rather quick! Even if you haven't set up everything you probably will be able to follow the masterclass tomorrow evening, so don't despair 🥲

I took about 28 hours to migrate (after a little over 24 hours to back up both computers onto a home cloud drive).  Glad thats over.  PSP 2022 seems to be working well.  I had to RE-register it.  I guess I'll have to do that with each one (2021, 2020, 2019, 2018 X9, X6, X, and Jasc 9 as I open them in the future.  I truly WISH the old "set" default file types under preferences still worked like it did with the original versions of PSP.  It's a major Pain in the you know what to go in and do each one manually using the Windows version of doing it.  I took care of the main file types I use (png, jpg, jpeg, raw, bmp, gif, tif, tiff, psd) but there are a ton of others that PSP can work with and I didn't feel like writing them down, then setting each one up.  Actually after initial glitches with my Microsoft 365 (specifically finding and installing the original outlook vs. the "new" outlook) and setting it up, it seems that EVERYTHING is working well.  I had to also go out and redownload and install the Character Map UWP app.  For some reason it did NOT migrate.  Also the OLD Microsoft Desktop Calendar is not included or supported in Windows 11 so I lost that one.  I don't really like the outlook version.  I missed the Master Class but I'll go in tomorrow and watch the video.

Please keep posting on this topic as you find glitches, anomalies, and easier-than-you-expected scenarios!  I just bought a new one and it will be here sometime later this week, I think. Like you, I expect it to be my last one ever.

This is what I got, does it sound right? It wasn’t very expensive is why I ask, although I specifically asked for “high end”.

The photo says the specs, but some extra prose he added:

”2TB fast Samsung boot SSD and 8TB data drives (2 x 4TB). The 64GB Ram is a ton and would be able to handle any task. The 4060 Ti Nvidia is the best bang for the buck.”

I will have to migrate and do all that stuff, too, YIKES!  I don’t have a home cloud, but thanks to your post I now know I need one, LOL! Running to Google it now.

Let me know what you think! I can upgrade, I assume until the boxes are unpacked.

(I only have PSP X4 and 2022, so hopefully the PSP part will be easy-peasy.)

WOW.  I got a Cyberpower PC.  Mine has (to start) 32 GB DDR5 RAM (upgradable to 128 GB) and I think video card is 16GB.  1 2TB Hard Drive.  I still have to open it up to determine exactly what type of SSD it is (M2 or SATA).  When you do the migration, make sure you use an ethernet cable between the two computers.  I did mine wirelessly through the router and it took 32+ hours before it was done.  I'm hoping I can take the 2 TB SSD out of the old computer and install it...if the motherboard will support it.  I'm betting can put both M2 type and up to two SATA 2.5" SSDs into it.  I'm only goiing to need one...its a Gaming computer but I wont be using it for that so I'm betting overheating will not be a problem.  Windows 11 apparently has a built in migration capability...I didn't know that so I had bought a one time use migration utility for mine.  I use McAfee with licenses for up to 5 devices and that didn't work right away...pretty sure the W10 version that migrated was wrong and I had to use a special removal tool from their website to remove the old one before I could re-install one that works.  So far everything else has worked but I'm nowhere near to having tried all of my programs and apps yet.

PS...it didn't have a VGA input so I had the perfect excuse to upgrade my "2nd" monitor LOL.  Have a much better one coming than the $15 one we found at the local peddlers mall.

I have no idea what I got, but I suspect a gaming computer, too, oh it says right on there it is a gaming computer. Oh and the prices are on there, too, I didn’t notice, I thought those numbers were more specs I didn’t understand, LOL!  I was working on testing a script….and I used the .jpg he sent for the paper.  

 The monitor is 10” bigger than my current. Did you see the monitors that were 43”….they span a desk! I worry because I wear readers…they are fixed focal length, so everything needs to be more or less the exact same distance from your head (eyes).  I need three monitors surrounding me like the people in a cyber security unit on TV 🙂

oddly,  I’m not even excited about it. A lot of darn work. My current one will be 20 years old. I got a really good one then because I realized how much trouble a new computer can be and I hated the hassle getting a new one, even if it is twice as fast and can hold twice as much.

43 inch monitor sounds awesome.  I've thought mine was huge at 36".  The new one will be smaller than that i.e. 27 inches...the little cheepie we got at the "junk" store is about 21 inches with crappy resolution so it will be a huge improvement for the second monitor situation.

@Suzy I am a fan of multiple monitors. I have 2 24" monitors. When I'm scrapping I have PSP on the left monitor and Picasa (the old program I use to see all my photos and scrapping supplies) on the right monitor. I can then drag and drop right into the layers palette in PSP. PSP is full screen on the monitor which gives me a nice size workspace to work on.

I've even had PSP open and will work along to any of the tutorials as I watch them on the right monitor. 

I was just able to upgrade my internet to fiber lines and I'm now getting twice the speed for the same price I was paying before. I signed up for an online backup service on the 1st and was amazed at how fast the backup went. I did an initial backup of 171 GB Sunday afternoon and it took 4 hrs 26 minutes. Then I set it to backup another 297 GB overnight and it took 12 hours. Years ago an online backup like that would take weeks! Last night it backed up 18 new/changed files in 2 minutes. So now I've got multiple backups of all my important stuff. A couple EHD's and online. I think I'm good on the computer front for awhile since this computer setup is less than 3 years old and still fast for what I do. It wasn't a gaming computer but as good as you can get without going gaming.

Oh, Daniel, I should clarify. I *didn't * get the 43" monitor, just saw it. Unless it curves around me, there would be blurry sections -- me, not the monitor -- because of my glasses. They make a curved one, too, I just didn't get it - it's only slightly curved.

Rene, How are you doing?  I thought you lived in some little town - how did you get fiber?  I think you need to vote for whoever is in office and keep them there! I remember when the days when it was a week to get a new computer set up-- what I think could happen is it will still take weeks. You know, until all the stuff is the way I want it.

I bought that Humble Bundle with the Corel Draw, so that goes on the new one.  I want to get a new laser printer, large plat scanner and copy machine all in one. They don't make that combination. hahaha. Natch!  I hope you are doing well and everything has cleared up and gone away....far away!

Assuming I don't have VGA troubles, I should be good to go with the monitors.

I'm doing good. One year checkup from 1st surgery looked good. Have the 1 year checkup for the last surgery in January and should be released back to my regular cardiologist who I now see every 6 months instead of just once a year.

I do live in a small town. We have a local phone/cable/internet company that serves our town and the surrounding area. It started out as a phone company in 1895. In 1995 they added ISP services then in 1998 cable TV. I have used their internet since 1995 and cable since 1998. Yes, I still have cable. If I've had service issues, the longest I've waited to get it checked out was 2.5 days and that's because the outage happened at 4:45 p.m. on Friday afternoon. They were out here on Monday morning to check it out. Internet was out but I still had cable. Turns out a squirrel had chewed through the internet wiring. We had snow/ice and then it melted and zapped the wire. (Cable and internet were 2 different wires). Neighbors that have service through Spectrum do not get that kind of service. The company itself is very involved in the community and still does things to improve both the community and the quality of life for those in our community. Thus the fiber upgrades. The installer told me that it is a long process because of the financial commitment and they are making the areas with issues with the old wiring the priority. I happen to live in one of them!

I am so lucky that whenever I need to upgrade my computer, I go to a technician (I have been a client there since the 90's!) and they transfer all my data for me. I don't have to reinstall anything. I have four internal drives and typically, they just move some of the drives into the new computer when they can, or transfer everything if they need to. Last time, they had to "upgrade" the C drive because the new "enclosure" was too small to accommodate all the drives so I got a bigger (more capacity) C that was smaller in size and could fit in the box.
