Thanks Carole. I’m going to pass on joining the challenge. Nobody I know uses paper calendars these days so even doing it for someone else is useless. LOL

Will it be available for all Diamond members when it is done so I could look at it later if I want?

Jannette for #16 just keep scrolling… all the way to the bottom. Doesn’t matter what page you are on. Scroll to the bottom of the page. Words are your friend.

Can the challenges just be for regular layouts instead? I don’t use a hanging calendar nor do I use calendars with photos so that part does not interest me.

Michele that’s the one I was having trouble with as well.

Carole thank you for the hint. I knew the sandwich had to do with bootcamp so was looking in that direction. Never associated it with layers since I never did bootcamp!

#16 was actually very easy to find! It is one of the others that is elusive for me. There was one that wasn’t where I expected it to be but I did eventually find it.

I took time out to watch coverage of the death of Queen Elizabeth. I’ll keep looking later.

Well, I’ve found 15 of the 16 but that last one I need is very elusive. Guess I should take a break and try to find it later.

R is for River. Auglaize River to be exact. My town was platted on this river from the days when it was the home of an Indian council house. As the town evolved, the downtown/main street was built on the south bank of the river. The town also expanded north of the river. So in other words, the town is divided by the river and there are 3 bridges within the city limits where you can cross the river. I live on the north side of the river, actually within walking distance. When I walk my dog, my route goes along a road where I can see the river behind the houses. The bridge I go over the most has the dam underneath it. The 2 photos on the left show the dam (bottom) and the river on the west side of the dam. The large photo was taken behind town looking towards the west.

I agree with Susan that sub-categories under a sub-category is not a good way to go in most cases.

I just looked at a couple of past challenge post threads. The July sketch challenge had 26 posts but only 7 of those are layouts. The August palette challenge had 12 posts with only 6 being layouts. It would take quite a while to fill those categories up so they wouldn’t be too bad to go through.

The only sub-category that I could see having a sub-category under it would be the tut/tech challenge since each of those are different themes. That way if someone wants to look up layouts pertaining to just a tut on multi-colored text, they don’t have to go through the watercolor tut to get to them.

Look at it this way. What would those larger galleries look like if they had not set up the sub-categories? How would someone find anything?

IMO, sub-categories would be the way to go. I know I spent time in the old storyteller thread to see what kind of layouts had been done previously. But I had to wade through a lot of other comments without layouts to see them all. With a sub-category, I could have just gone there and viewed all layouts for any storyteller challenge.

Now, as far as the sub-categories, I say just one sub-category for each type of challenge. No need to set up a category for each month or year that it is a challenge. Because of this being a smaller community, the sub-category won’t fill up with 100’s of layouts that fast where in the larger galleries a monthly challenge could easily have up to 50 layouts just in one month.

I could see that any layouts in the ‘what you are working on this month’ threads could be posted in a member’s individual gallery since some of them are not related to challenges at all. If they are a challenge layout, then yes, they should be in the challenge gallery under the correct sub-category.

Hope you can figure out what I mean!

I usually avoid dark backgrounds because I’ve never been able to get the shadows right. So this is something I’m interested in as well.

I posted on your blog post about my experience. So I’ll just say that I use multiple EHD’s for my backups.

As far as Day 7, I didn’t feel comfortable doing a layout to post on the internet for this subject so I didn’t do it.

Thanks Carole! I was hoping for that feature. It is so much easier when you load a layout to a gallery then post the link into a forum post that then shows the layout. Even better is when you can click on the photo in the post to go directly to the gallery image. In all other galleries I post in, the details of kits/templates used are posted in the gallery instead of directly in the post.

Susan’s question made me think of something else. Is there the ability to get a link from a gallery photo to post in a forum post?

I can’t test it since I don’t have any layouts that I want to put in there at this time. I’m very selective about what I post on the internet and I’m working on stuff now that I don’t want posted.

I guess I can try when it gets to “R” in alphabet album!

I haven’t looked into it very closely but will we be able to pull up all of our layouts if they are posted in the various categories? The couple of  forum galleries I have posted in have that option so that I can see all my layouts at once. I also use the tagging portion to give credit to any designers (store forum galleries) especially if there are 2 or more designer products used.

If that isn’t available then to me, using a members album and tagging the challenge (workshop, etc) would be something I’d be more likely to do.

Day 6. Fear. I really don’t remember anything from my childhood that I was really fearful of. So I went with a movie that I have never been able to watch in one sitting. I know others in the past have done this same movie… glad I’m not alone! I pulled the movie poster from the internet. I used a template from Scrapping With Liz’s “Now Showing” collection and a kit by Kristin Aagard also called “Now Showing”. Both were part of a mega collection at a previous shop they sold at but are both available at The Lily Pad.

For the string elements, I did a flood fill of a color in the kit then added noise to them. Very subtle but can be seen when I zoom in. I tried adding texture to it but didn’t like it. I like the noise addition.

Day 5. Had to use PSP X8 to do this layout because every time I started with the text tool in PSP2021 I got a runtime error. Need to look into this further. I did not do a title on a path since I wanted to use word art for my title. I actually used several different kits which is not something I do very often. I’m a one kit scrapper! Kits used were all from The Lily Pad. Kristen Aagard’s Veggie Garden and Sunny Side Up. The 3rd kit was a collab kit that is no longer available called Roots. The journaling font is Rustys Hand and the photo was grabbed from the internet.

My story is a special memory for me. Yeah, it is about food but also something that my grandfather and I shared. He had something special that he did with each of his grandchildren when they were young. This was mine.

Day 4 Sports. I had to dig deep to think of something for this one. I was not and still am not athletic. And, when I was growing up girls participating in organized sports was not a thing in my small town. Even in high school in the early 70’s, the girls who did play basketball and volleyball were only playing in intramural sports. But there was a different type of sport that I could participate in. Bowling.

Kit is Bowl-O-Rama by Kirsten Aagard and is available at TheLilyPad.

Jannette I very rarely have problems like I had yesterday. And, in all of my years scrapping, I’ve never started a layout over. But the template issues just frustrated the heck out of me yesterday. I finally figured out what the problem was and checked today’s downloads before I even started a layout so that I don’t have the same problem. Success today!

Day 3. I was not a child that got into trouble. The first 3 prompts just don’t apply to me and if I did something as a child I have no memory of it! I had to think awhile but did come up with a trick my dad played on a younger cousin. I was 18 and helped to get things together for the trick so I went with it for my layout. I used a kit by Traci Reed at Sweet Shoppe Designs (I’m With The Band) for my papers and elements. I did use the title tutorial as well. I used the Cooper Black font for it.

Day 2. I had font issues using the provided template and even after starting over when I figured out the problem, I ended up with a corrupted file and neither of my PSP versions would open it. I did find and was able to get a version of the file with papers only. (And, yes I had been saving it throughout the process. The final save of the file didn’t work and corrupted the file). I lost all of my journaling and shadowing. So 4 hours in, I started over using a template from Scrapping With Liz (Recyclables 44 available at The LilyPad) and a retired kit by Bella Gypsy called Kaleidoscope. And, I actually like the final version better than the first version so I guess that is a win!

I again used the warp brush on element shadows. I use Forte font filled with a paper from the kit for my title and again used an inner bevel instead of a drop shadow. I am finding I really like that effect for titles.

Carole, yes I always use the accent when I’m handwriting my name. There is another story about my name that I should do as a companion page to this one now that I think about it!  But when things started being computerized, the accent couldn’t be used since in those days there weren’t all the fancy fonts. And, even using a typewriter, it couldn’t be used. So I transitioned to Rene’. Used the apostrophe behind the e. Even now with some fonts, I cannot use the accent since it isn’t in the font character map. So I mainly use the apostrophe even now… and I had forgotten the code to type the é (had to figure it out).

As for Dad liking the name, he did probably meet someone with the name when he was in the Navy and really liked it. His ship was in the Mediterranean for a few months before it transitioned to the south Pacific. Oddly enough there were 2 people in my small town with the name in the 50’s. A father and son.

Day 1. In all the years of my scrapping, I never told the story of my name. So I did with this layout. I used a retired template from Fiddle-Dee-Dee designs and a kit (Putting Down Roots) from Kim Jensen available at TheLilyPad digital store. I wanted to do a layout in the style I normally use.

I took the time to figure out how to journal in an odd configuration (which is why I chose this template). I also did more with the warp brush on my shadows on my elements. The “My Name” title is using the KG Makes You Stronger font with a paper as my fill. Then I rasterized it and applied an inner bevel instead of a shadow.

Q is for “Quirky”. It was hard to find something about my town that started with Q but then I thought about some of the people over the years that everyone in town knows about because of some interesting traits they had.  From dictionary.com: Usually, a person is described as quirky when they behave in a way or have qualities that are unique to them or that set them apart from others.

So my Q layout mentions just 3 of the people in town that are considered “quirky”. At the time of making the layout, one was still living but as of now, all 3 are deceased. But these 3 are still talked about when people reminisce about “the old days” of growing up here.

I know who she is from the 2 main shops that I buy from. Super nice gal. She readily admits that she goes for the easiest way to do things.

I contacted the original maker of the layout since she is a regular poster at another forum I frequent. Basically, she did what I did.

                                                        Her words:

Looking at my page and knowing myself I took the easiest route. lol

Most likely I created 4 quadrants and shrunk the paper down. Then just duplicated, flipped and rotated each one to line up.

IMO, some times it really is simple!

Suzy, I don’t have any of those scripts either and I’m using 2021.

I did a search in Corel’s store and did find a script bundle that mentions 4 scripts with the word “key” in them.

Black & White High Key (regular $9.99)
                                                          Color High Key (regular $9.99)
Black & White Low Key (regular $9.99)
                                                          Color Low Key (regular $9.99)

The bundle of 14 scripts cost $49.99.

Yeah, that is probably the problem. I just tried it with a different paper that has thin and thick stripes. The thick stripes have wording on them and I was curious how it would look. The stripes are the right degree (bottom left to top right). The top 2 quadrants were fine but the bottom 2 didn’t line up at all. So I really think that to do this needs the right paper. In other words, not every paper will work for this technique.

I’m curious as to what the original paper looked like. I’ve searched her stuff and can’t find one that looks like it would match.

I love to tell the stories! That is why I got into scrapbooking over 20 years ago (although then it was with paper). I was taught that it is very important to tell the story behind the photo in a way that anyone can look at the page and understand what is going on (without you being there to tell them). Granted at times not a lot is known but it is important to at least note the “Who What When Where and Why” if you know any of them.

Carole, do we have to use the templates and quick pages you provide or can we use what we already have? I was looking through the 2020 class thread and wondered if the same prompts will be used or are you changing them up? I do have some things I have never documented that would work for a couple of them, just would have to find the photos!
