  1. Jannette I very rarely have problems like I had yesterday. And, in all of my years scrapping, I've never started a layout over. But the template issues just frustrated the heck out of me yesterday. I finally figured out what the problem was and checked today's downloads before I even started a layout so that I don't have the same problem. Success today!

Day 3. I was not a child that got into trouble. The first 3 prompts just don't apply to me and if I did something as a child I have no memory of it! I had to think awhile but did come up with a trick my dad played on a younger cousin. I was 18 and helped to get things together for the trick so I went with it for my layout. I used a kit by Traci Reed at Sweet Shoppe Designs (I'm With The Band) for my papers and elements. I did use the title tutorial as well. I used the Cooper Black font for it.

  2. Day 2. I had font issues using the provided template and even after starting over when I figured out the problem, I ended up with a corrupted file and neither of my PSP versions would open it. I did find and was able to get a version of the file with papers only. (And, yes I had been saving it throughout the process. The final save of the file didn't work and corrupted the file). I lost all of my journaling and shadowing. So 4 hours in, I started over using a template from Scrapping With Liz (Recyclables 44 available at The LilyPad) and a retired kit by Bella Gypsy called Kaleidoscope. And, I actually like the final version better than the first version so I guess that is a win!

I again used the warp brush on element shadows. I use Forte font filled with a paper from the kit for my title and again used an inner bevel instead of a drop shadow. I am finding I really like that effect for titles.

  3. Carole, yes I always use the accent when I'm handwriting my name. There is another story about my name that I should do as a companion page to this one now that I think about it!  But when things started being computerized, the accent couldn't be used since in those days there weren't all the fancy fonts. And, even using a typewriter, it couldn't be used. So I transitioned to Rene'. Used the apostrophe behind the e. Even now with some fonts, I cannot use the accent since it isn't in the font character map. So I mainly use the apostrophe even now... and I had forgotten the code to type the é (had to figure it out).

As for Dad liking the name, he did probably meet someone with the name when he was in the Navy and really liked it. His ship was in the Mediterranean for a few months before it transitioned to the south Pacific. Oddly enough there were 2 people in my small town with the name in the 50's. A father and son.

  4. Day 1. In all the years of my scrapping, I never told the story of my name. So I did with this layout. I used a retired template from Fiddle-Dee-Dee designs and a kit (Putting Down Roots) from Kim Jensen available at TheLilyPad digital store. I wanted to do a layout in the style I normally use.

I took the time to figure out how to journal in an odd configuration (which is why I chose this template). I also did more with the warp brush on my shadows on my elements. The "My Name" title is using the KG Makes You Stronger font with a paper as my fill. Then I rasterized it and applied an inner bevel instead of a shadow.

  5. Linda Walker Any chance you have your birth certificate? Most of those that I have seen have the time of birth on them and I've seen a lot since I researched genealogy in the past. Even mine has a time and it's "old".
  6. Q is for "Quirky". It was hard to find something about my town that started with Q but then I thought about some of the people over the years that everyone in town knows about because of some interesting traits they had.  From dictionary.com: Usually, a person is described as quirky when they behave in a way or have qualities that are unique to them or that set them apart from others.

So my Q layout mentions just 3 of the people in town that are considered "quirky". At the time of making the layout, one was still living but as of now, all 3 are deceased. But these 3 are still talked about when people reminisce about "the old days" of growing up here.

  7. I contacted the original maker of the layout since she is a regular poster at another forum I frequent. Basically, she did what I did.

    Her words:

Looking at my page and knowing myself I took the easiest route. lol

Most likely I created 4 quadrants and shrunk the paper down. Then just duplicated, flipped and rotated each one to line up.

IMO, some times it really is simple!

  8. Yeah, that is probably the problem. I just tried it with a different paper that has thin and thick stripes. The thick stripes have wording on them and I was curious how it would look. The stripes are the right degree (bottom left to top right). The top 2 quadrants were fine but the bottom 2 didn't line up at all. So I really think that to do this needs the right paper. In other words, not every paper will work for this technique.
  9. I love to tell the stories! That is why I got into scrapbooking over 20 years ago (although then it was with paper). I was taught that it is very important to tell the story behind the photo in a way that anyone can look at the page and understand what is going on (without you being there to tell them). Granted at times not a lot is known but it is important to at least note the "Who What When Where and Why" if you know any of them.

Carole, do we have to use the templates and quick pages you provide or can we use what we already have? I was looking through the 2020 class thread and wondered if the same prompts will be used or are you changing them up? I do have some things I have never documented that would work for a couple of them, just would have to find the photos!

  10. I just tried this. I opened a 3600x3600 canvas. I then opened a 3600x3600 paper from a kit. I resized the paper to 50% and duplicated the layer 3 times. I then placed each layer in a different quadrant lining each one up with the pick tool (yeah, guide lines would work but I have trouble with those since I don't use them much). After getting all layers in place, I did an Image Flip Horizontal on the top right and bottom left quadrants. Middle line up.

  11. I just looked at the original layout and it looks to me like she shrunk the 12x12 paper to 4x4 (edit should be 6x6) and placed it in the 4 quadrants of the page, flipping each layer to line up the middle. I say this because another layout shown using the kit shows the stripes on the paper as being a wider than on her layout.

I could be totally wrong but that is what it looks like to me.

  12. P is for PIZZA!  My favorite pizza is from a local pizza place. Love their crust, thin but not too thin. As for the type of pizza, ham and pineapple from them is so darn good. Chain pizza places cannot match this pizza. They also have dynamite deep friend potato skins with bacon and cheese.

  13. Susan, the journaling was actually from the obituary the family wrote up for him. I told my cousin it was "perfect".  For anybody that lived through the 60's and early 70's, this young man would have been right at home. He was a free spirit and will be missed by all who knew him.

I got a pop up in my windows notifications that PSP2023 was out. I've been expecting it this week. I hadn't looked into it yet though.

  14. My cousin's son passed away July 18th and they had a private family scattering of the ashes on July 30th. Jasper loved being on the water in his boat, especially the Ohio River (they live in southeastern Ohio about an hour from the river) so they chose to scatter his ashes in water. My cousin sent me a photo of their boat trip for it.

I exclusively use digital store bought kits for all of my scrapping. I used a template from Fiddle-Dee-Dee Designs (the-lilypad.com) called Star Spangled. I used a kit from Kristin Cronin-Barrow (www.sweetshoppedesigns.com) called A Forest Tale: Over the River.

  15. I never had a Cricut but had a CraftRobo (around 2007/2008) which was a Silhouette type cutter. It used software and a computer to do the cuts so unless you had a laptop, it wasn't as portable. Many of my scrapbooking friends then started with the Cricut after having the other because of the portability. However, they had to buy cartridges which eventually got to be too much if going to a retreat. Many times the Cricut users would coordinate as to who would bring what cartridges to a retreat so one person didn't have to take everything they had. Those that have stuck with the Cricuts do like the newer models since things have evolved as to how the designs are made available to the users.

But what I really wanted to say was that those paper scrappers would not let any of the "wasted" papers go to waste. Those scraps were quite useful. I used them with small punches (think small pawprints which I used a lot on my dog pages). I also made lots of small square pieces that I used as design elements. Many of my friends were even more frugal with them than I was! I did traditional scrapping and dabbled in digital scrapping for about a year. I still have some traditional supplies because there are times that I have the urge to work with paper. I also had some projects that were better being done with paper.

I still have my CraftRobo and can use it with Silhouette software and my computer if I want to make something.

  16. N is for "Native Americans". The area where I live was a rich history of Indian tribes living in the area. Several different ones over the years. My town was at one time a council house for the tribes. Over the years many people have found various artifacts from those times when plowing fields in the surrounding area or even when building new housing. Even though the tribes moved westward, this area does not take their history lightly.
