Alphabet Album - Q

Have you ever made an ALPHABET album? It is a fun way to showcase photos or stories, but with an added twist.

 

I have created an alphabet album in the past, where each page had a title (and a topic) starting with one letter of the alphabet. Then, the pages were placed in alphabetical order, even if not in chronological order. So, for 2022, I am suggesting this long-term challenge for you. With one page every 2 weeks, we will be able to finish the year with a complete album. It is up to you to decide if you want to print it or share it otherwise.

 

I will share my own pages, just for ideas, but I will also give you some more words that will start with the letter of the week. Try to think of one overarching theme to use. It could be about your last vacation, a family gathering, a hobby of yours, a location, etc. Think of something that you have lots of photos of or many words you can associate with.

 

If you have not started yet and want to jump in, no problem. You know the alphabet so you know what letters you will have to do and you still have many months to catch up on those few pages, so don't hesitate. There is also no deadline, so if this week's page is done only next month, it is totally fine too.

 

So here is my Q layout.

 

 

Of course, you can use words in your own language too. As you can see, this album was done in French.

 

Here are some other words that could be used as title/theme:

 

Qualify, Quality, Quarter, Queen, Quench, Quest, Quick, Quiet, Quiz, Quote, Quota, Quake, Question,

Quill, Quilt, Quack, Quit, Quartz, Queue, Quirk, Quarantine, and more (there aren't as many words starting with Q as for other letters so you might need to be creative).

Q is for "Quirky". It was hard to find something about my town that started with Q but then I thought about some of the people over the years that everyone in town knows about because of some interesting traits they had.  From dictionary.com: Usually, a person is described as quirky when they behave in a way or have qualities that are unique to them or that set them apart from others.

 

So my Q layout mentions just 3 of the people in town that are considered "quirky". At the time of making the layout, one was still living but as of now, all 3 are deceased. But these 3 are still talked about when people reminisce about "the old days" of growing up here.

Just as Rene I had some trouble finding something for the letter Q. But in my village as in many others, we have a lot of oaktrees (Eikenbomen) lining streets and in parks and the Latin name for Oak (Eik) is Quercus. In preparation for this letter I took some photos of the Oak. But there is a problem with the trees nowadays caused by a caterpillar that lives only on and around oaks. It's called the "eikenprocessierups"  or the "oak processionary caterpillar" and its fire hairs are causing extreme itching on peoples bare skin with red spots. When those tiny hairs come in your eyes you have to go a doctor immediately. Among many others it happened to me too and I got special medication to avoid an infection or worse. On many trees in Mai, June and July there are warning ribbons to indicate that there is a nest in the tree and you can see sometimes hundreds of them crawling on the trunk and branches. When they purpate the hairs become airborne and the wind or birds distribute them. At first the caterpillars  were eliminated by spraying the trees with chemicals but that killed all the other insects as well.  A kind of big vacuum cleaner, handled by guys in protective gear, collects them and they are burned to get rid of the hairs for good. Also a lot of trees have nesting boxes for the coletits who happen to love them and feed their young on it.

 

I used a template from Lab 12-1, but I'm not sure Carole will recognize it after I changed it a lot and in the end it was more a starting point. The acorns were in my stash, the leaves are picture tubes and the background has a wooden texture.

Bonnie, my great-grandmother would make quilts out of worn-out clothes. They used to be filled with "old army blankets" (I was told). When the top of the quilt became worn out too, another layer would be added. In the end, those quilts would also become quite heavy! I remember loving to sleep with that weight on me.

Carole, our quilts were created from scraps also. I really like that. Matching pieces from the fabric store are great but I love the history/memories in the old quilts.
