        micfin,

I use a tablet. I have yet to make a clean extraction. Some part of the extraction will need the Eraser Tool or the Clone tool.

A mouse cam be used. The cursor needs to be slowed down in relation to the mouse movement. In Windows 10 go to Start > Settings > Devices > pointer (find a setting search box) > Show all results > Change the mouse pointer display or speed. An icon will appear on the Task Bar. Select the icon and adjust the pointer speed towards Slow.

        Object extractor –
In PSP 2019 go to Help > Help topics > Put Object Extractor in the Search box. There is a lot of information there. Note that part of the background is to be selected with the object.

After the extraction and before the editing, save the extraction as a PSPimage. Edit > Copy (puts the extraction on the Windows clip board) > Paste as new image > Save as (PSPimage). Make a Duplicate. One never knows, does one.

In PSP, the transparent parts of an image are shown as a gray checker board pattern. I prefer a solid color. Go to File > Preferences > Click on General Program Preferences > Select Transparences and Shading. Under Scheme click on the drop down selections. I like solid green to depict the transparent parts.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, zoom in on a part of the object. At times, I go right to the pixel enlargement. Select the Eraser Tool and adjust the size down to about the pixel size. With the mouse, a colored pixel can be erased and the transparent green will fill in. Click and erase or click, drag and erase. Use Undo to fix errors. As you develop a technique, try erasing larger groups with a larger Eraser tip size.

As a final note, the clone tool can be used to fill transparent spots that need to be colored.

I am using PSP 2019 Ultimate.
Using the Object Extractor on most of this. The birds are from our grand daughter at her humming bird feeder. The oak tree limb is from our front yard. The sky is from Pixel Scrapper.
Used Perfectly Clear for color adjustments.
The Object Extractor maintained the moss and lichen bits on the limb perimeter. Used the Eraser Tool to remove the wee bits of sky amongst the moss filaments and lichen – slow but worthwhile.

From the User Guide in PSP:

            To use a retouch brush

1 On the Tools toolbar, choose a retouch brush.
2 On the Tool Options palette, set the brush controls.
3 Drag in the image to apply the tool.

Smudge – Spreads color and image details from the starting point and picks up new color and image details as it moves, as though smearing paint.

The background eraser is your friend.

Why would a person take an image with water blobs from a fountain with a blue sky background, replace the sky with a red circular gradient, and toss in a few humming birds? The background eraser made me do it….

The weather vane image had a blue sky with clouds. Working with Tolerance and Brush size, the natural sky was obliterated.
The background eraser made me do it….

James – Good results with Displacement Map Effect. I have not tried it. I will put it on my “Things to do” list.

I have used the Pic to Paint program. Got some good results using Fractals as the source.

Presently, I am working on the Out of Bounds technique.

Both photos were taken in our yard.

For intricate outlines, the Edit Selection tool is best. I use it for birds, leaves, flowers, etc. For smooth outlines, I find the Object Extractor is good and Flood Fill is great to color in the interior. It gets it all without having to edit the small misses.
As you demonstrated in the Basic Extraction webinar with the apple, flood filling the transparency part with white, makes using the Eraser tool easy to use to remove the unwanted parts of the extraction.

                      Helen –

What extraction tool did you use? Presently, I found the Object Extractor tool works pretty well for a smooth outline such as this. The PSP User Guide has good instructions on how to use this tool. The Erase tool used in conjunction with the Object Extractor tool gives good results with a fairly smooth outline./

That is a very nice greeting card. The elements all fit together without being cluttered. Your color selections and shadows are well chosen.

I have been learning how to use the various extraction tools in PSP 2019.
The eagle image was taken by our son in law, Greg. They live near the Oregon coast.
I used the Selection Tool, ellipse.
On the duck image, I used two extraction tools.
On the grass clumps on the left of the image, I used the Selections > Edit Selection tool. I wanted to get the individual grass leaves and grass clumps to be on top of the background.
On the ducks and the rest of the grass, I used the Image > Object extractor. For me, this tool worked better than the selection tools; however, it takes a wee bit of practice.

The background is a photo posted by Cassel a few weeks ago.

I am working on using the Selection tools and layouts.  Using shadows in the layout adds to the effect.

This is our great grand daughter, Rose.
