Day 6: I’ve had a hibiscus bush in my yard for years and, until the never-to-be-forgotton 2020, never paid any attention to it. Stuck at home, I decided to photograph its flowers in order to practice shooting things close-up. I had no idea how interesting I’d find my little project. I found the bean-shaped anthers so pretty and was fascinated by the shiny pollen grains bursting from them. I also had no idea that my hibiscus was home to a thriving colony of aphids. (I didn’t know what the white specks were, but I finally got a clear enough shot of a couple of them and then was able to identify them using the internet). Since I didn’t know the plant had aphids, I’ve never done anything about them and the plant is thriving.
Cassel: a lot of designers are arranging their kits so that the elements jump off the page. I know they use large drop shadows and I’m guessing they put the elements with drop shadows on a number of layers before merging everything. I could be wrong, but the shadows don’t seem to all go in the same direction. Do you have instructions about how to do this somewhere in Scrapbook Campus? I wanted to make the birds on my day 5 page pop more. But I couldn’t figure out how to do it.
The cat kit is from Pixelscrapper and I guess it’s okay for me to show a picture of it since it’s free. The second is Scrapgirls. I’m not sure about the ethics of including a picture of it since it has to be purchased. I’ll delete it if it isn’t right to show it.
Day 4
Ann: Thanks!
Carole: I was just reading the directions of scripts I downloaded from your store and I’ve been instructed to save some of them in the restricted folder. I don’t think any of the scripts I’ve gotten from Corel specify where to put them (or they did and I didn’t read the directions, which is possible!) and I’ve made folders for them with labels that are meaningless to anyone except me. Despite not being in the correct folder, they work. So what difference does a specific folder make for a particular script?
Day 3. My yard is chock full of green anole lizards and I like photographing them. This one’s almost finished shedding its skin except for that pesky bit that’s stuck to its back leg.
First, Happy Birthday to Carole! (And happy unbirthday to me since I just went shopping and got some great scripts/brushes/tubes! Thanks, Cassel!)
Day 2. My local park has a pair of black swans and they finally were able to hatch some viable eggs.
When I was a child, I spent hours looking at my father’s West Point yearbooks and one of the sports he participated in, lacrosse, was one that skipped my generation and I only knew what it was because I had seen pictures of him playing it. Many years later, I was walking around my neighborhood and saw kids with equipment that reminded me of pictures of my father and I asked what game they were playing and it turned out to be be lacrosse. Now my grandson is playing the same game his greatgrandfather played some 80 years ago.
Cassell: I use the load/save mask under the layers tab a lot to cut background papers into different shapes. I have lots of masks that I’ve downloaded over the past couple of years and they’re in folders basically by similarity in shape. All I have to do is hit “load/save mask” and scroll through until I find one I like and the program does all of the work.
When I tried printing out cards I also used cardstock. I have photography paper but I’ve never used it, though I’m not sure why. I’m thinking for cards, I might print on the photography paper and then glue that to cardstock.
I think of scrapbook pages as my contribution to family history, but I don’t think I’d ever print them out. My family is much more digitally inclined so I think they’re happier getting a sd card with everything on it than they would be with printed pages.
Here are days 4 and 5. I actually start each challenge day following whatever the directions are but, at some point, I forget what I am supposed to be doing and the results end up not fitting the assugnment. But my initial intentions are good, if that counts for anything.
Cassel: You’d ask if I planned on making two of my pages a double page. And, I guess the answer is no because I don’t plan to print anything. Everything I make goes into a folder titled “The Neverending Scrapbook” which is sorted by subject (e.g. my grandchildren, my parents, etc) and year. They can be seen individually by either scrolling or as a slideshow.
Which made me think of something else: in my experience, things that look really great digitally aren’t nearly as visually interesting when printed–I make Christmas and birthday cards for my grandchildren and they all look kind of flat when I print them. Though I suppose the end result probably has something to do with the printer and type of paper one uses.
Day 3: I remember the first time I tried the kaleidoscope effect a couple of years ago. I had no idea what I was doing and it was hard. This time I understood which felt really good (though I still don’t like the way it looks). Also, I’ve just begun to use the “paste as a new image” command in the last couple of days. Wow-that makes saving bits and pieces that I’ve made and like so easy and it’s only taken two years for me to discover it. What will I know in 2022 I wonder?
So my dress is sitting by a pond. I thought it would be fun to add a little interest by inserting the alligator. (My grandson and I went hunting alligators to photograph when he was about 8, and this is taken from one of his shots.)
So, it’s day 4 and here’s my page for day 2. Maybe I’ll catch up at some point. The first page is a kind of explanation of what the point of my pages are.
For day 2, my plaids are teeny tiny. I wanted to do the challenge but I’m not a big fan of plaids. I used the Comic Sketch script to change the look of the photos.
This is my third time participating in the Love Story Challenge which means I’ve been doing digital scrapbooking for two years now–time has passed so quickly. And my skills have improved. I remember the first year was so hard for me because everything was so new. I’ve gotten more comfortable with my PSP so I can do more now.
The overall idea behind my pages for this year is “it’s all about the dress” and it has to do with my mother’s wedding dress. I’m uploading a title page and the day 1 challenge.

Thanks, Cassel! I downloaded the paper from pixelscrapper.com. It’s a design (Paint 07) by Melo Vrijhof included in her Mixed Media 3 Papers collection. I really like her very original, often quirky approach to design.

It seems that when my mother was a young girl, telegrams were the trendy way to communicate. I’ve found a number of them to her. This one is congratulating her on her engagement to my father.
Here’s mine.
Gerry: My brother lives in southern Ohio and I live near New Orleans. I’ve driven up to visit him several times in the past year and I’ve stayed at a dog-friendly hotel I found and like in in Athens each time. (That changed this summer when I brought one of my brother’s dogs home with me. One dog is manageable for an overnight at a hotel–I wasn’t sure about two, so I just drove straight through).
You’re near the Wheeler Wildlife Refuge–I’m so envious. I’d never seen either a sandhill or a whooping crane before last December when I stopped by there. It would be great to be able to spend more than a couple of hours photographing them as well as other birds that stop there. (While I enjoy taking pictures of my grandchildren, I love photographing birds).
Metairie. Louisiana, USA: it’s directly west of New Orleans
I was playing with a 5-part frame I found online
In this one I used the same picture of him spinning to give the page a little depth
I found three–all of my grandson which is interesting since I actually photograph his sister more since he doesn’t like having his picture taken. In this one, the background and the middle picture are the same.
To: Cassel and Lynda-thanks!
Gerry-I overthink everything as well. I can spend an inordinate amount of time on a page that looks like it took a few minutes. You did a really nice job with your text fitting into a shape. I don’t think I’ve ever done that but I need to learn how but I like the way it looks.
Art–I didn’t realize that it didn’t snow much in Holland. Your photos took me back to Montana–my father was stationed there for several years in the mid-late ’50s–my toes started to hurt just as I was thinking of the number times my feet froze while skating at the outdoor rink near my house. There was a little hut with a wood-burning stove and I’d go in, take off my skates, put them back on, and within minutes, my feet were freezing again. Actually, my feet froze on the bus on the way to school; there were two little heaters that only heated air about a foot or two away from its vents. I actually loved living in Montana and loved the snow but my feet never adapted.
This is only tangental to this challenge but everytime I open my PaintShop Pro I get an offer for the 2021 edition –my question is about the descriptive word “upgrade”–does that mean that if I pay for this edition it’ll make changes to edition I own, the 2019 one, rather than giving me a totally new program that leaves my other one alone?
A few years ago, I had an edition of psp that had some features I liked;I bought a new one online and all the features I liked in the old program disappeared. Is that what upgrade means? I won’t know if the latest edition will take away something I like until it’s already gone, dismissed by the shiny new edition.
Does this question make sense?
Lynda: thanks so much for mentioning you used notebook for your text–I’d forgotten about that (and how to do it)–once I found it, it made doing text so much easier because I type way faster that my PaintShop Pro can process what I’m doing and it was making me crazy–so, thanks again!
food memories
day 4 sports….I really don’t do sports–my brothers used to say I “threw like a girl”. The swimmer in the picture is my granddaughter who does do sports.
day: a Christmas memory
Here I go again with new pages: day 1
