Can you think of other situations where a selection might be present and you could use that information for the following steps?

One thing that can be useful is to determine if a text, created from the string asked to the user, is going to fit inside a particular shape or not. Think of the various Datestamp scripts where you might want to have some text that would be too long. This information will allow you to size it down OR let the user know that it is too long.
