The Campus is the perfect place to learn more about photo editing, various techniques, or PSP in general.

This challenge will give you an opportunity to practice some of those techniques or use some tools.

This month’s Tut/Tech Challenge is the Silhouette. This technique is fairly simple, and as usually, I am sure you will find creative ways to use it. Remember that you can create a silhouette from a person, but it can also be an object. There is a tutorial explaining the process here.

What will you create? Show us below. We want to be inspired.

This is my take on the Silhoutte Challenge. I selected it using the Freehand > Point to Point and then edited the selection as shown by Cassel.

I cropped the photo to a square and ran Cassel’s free Polaroid Script.

Cristina, a lovely silhouette photo. It conveys to me the joy of love and companionship while viewing the beautiful sites around us.

For this Silhouette Challenge I decided to have a go at making up a little scene. Started out with a free photo of a Sunset I have in my collection- modified it to have a black part on the bottom so I could add the silhouettes. I made silhouettes from 2 pictures I have, one  of a man on horse and one of a cabin (which I put in the distance). The tree and grasses are brushes. When I finished my project my husband commented that it reminded him of his younger days in outback Australia, so I was happy with the results I achieved. Hope the colours are ok when you enlarge to view.

Dawn, that silhouette looks like it is really part of the photo! Very good result!

Cristina, it looks to me like a picture taken of the couple on a doorway of a cabin. Great effect.

Cassel, thank you so much for giving us this challenge, it has saved some photos from being in the “maybe delete” folder! We took these photos of iron cutouts at Newman, W.A., but the time of day wasn’t ideal and we were very disappointed with the results. Now I have used the silhouette effect I am really pleased with how they have turned out and the photos are back in “keepers” folder! The truck is actually blue but I use the Luminance (L) blend mode to literally blend it into the background. Hope to learn more about blend modes in the Master Class.

Cristina, I love the way the silhouette could be looking at the camera or looking at the view, great idea for blurry photos or ones where the facial expressions are not quite right.

Dawn, your sunset is beautiful, very clever to add your own images to the background.

Wow you ladies have been busy. I haven’t got any further than looking for a suitable image. Anyway, you have now inspired me to get cracking and have a go. You have all done fabulous works of art. Love them.

Marlene, I think your page looks terrific, love everything about it. Glad you didn’t put the photos in the delete folder. My brother and sister in-law are at present doing a trip to the Pilbara Region so it may be possible I will be given some snapshots of this area of WA.when they return. Enjoyed viewing your page, thanks for showing it.

                  Best wishes

Thanks Dawn, glad you liked the page. The Pilbara is one of my favourite places in Australia, I’m sure your brother and sister-in-law will love it and bring back lots of photos for you. We had a spine-tingling moment last year in the Karijini National Park in the Hamersley Ranges: we went to a lookout at a place called Circular Pool (photo below) and as we were gazing down into the gorge we heard what sounded like pan pipes playing on the breeze. Apparently a tourist had gone down to the pool and sat there playing his flute (he had been to other places as well) – it was magical.

Hi Marlene, looking at the photo of the Circular Pool, and reading of your experience while you were there, I can understand how you would call it magical.  I am sure it  would be a  special moment that you will never forget.

Dawn and Marlene, I can only say, amazing work! I like to pay attention to the details, and in both pages there are plenty to see.

Dawn, you showed us that we don’t need to have our own  photo to participate in the challenges.  If you hadn’t said anything I would have thought the trees and grass were part of the photo. The colors are perfect.

Marlene, the rusty background, papers and title are a perfect match to the photos and the place you were. You pointed out something that I didn’t realize before. We can use this effect with photos that didn’t turn out that great and that we would probably delete without thinking twice. 🙂

Cassel, this photo of my husband and I was taken last year when we were vacationing, and my nieces and their husbands took us for a weekend tour. We were going up the mountain and stopped there for photos, where we thought was a nice scenery. This is the original photo.

Cristina, thank you for your kind comments about my Silhouette Sunset page.  The Challenges that Cassel has given us have been great and I am looking forward to more of them.

                          best wishes,

                          Dawn.
