How do you use the straighten tool?

I click the straighten took and a straight line comes up....am I just supposed to MANUALLY match my crooked line to that?  This cannot be right! LOL!  ?

Ah, thanks! I was using it on a vector line, but it wasn’t on the line, if that makes any sense. (I was using it the wrong way.)
