In December, our monthly theme is GIFTS.

Let’s play our monthly alphabet game.

Let's add stories to this game. Based on the alphabet, name a gift that you either gave or received (along with the story). It might be a funny story, a sad story, a surprising story, anything. If you happen to have a picture of that gift, it would be great, but I suspect that we might not have taken the time to snap a picture especially if it was a few decades ago!

Let's go!

Last year was a special surprise for my daughter Heather.  She loves the movie It's a Wonderful Life and owns a copy of the leg lamp.  I got her the Hallmark Ornament Leg lamp for her tree.  You pull the chain and it lights up!  She was absolutely thrilled!  1st thing she put on her tree this year!

When I was around thirteen years of age all I wanted for Christmas that year was a BIBLE so I could have my very own to read and study from. On Christmas morning I opened all my gifts that were under the tree but no Bible, I was so disappointed. Then my Mother surprised me with one more gift, a box about the size and weight of one filled with candy, my reaction was to sit and look at it and inside I was asking myself why would they give me a box of candy because you see I was a type One Diabetic since I was twelve years old, inside I was crying but outside I was trying to smile and be thankful! But when I opened the box it was a BIBLE. The best Christmas and the best present I ever received!

When I was younger, my brother had an aquarium with turtles. It was a fairly large aquarium and he needed some "decoration" to fill it and entertain the turtles. Before Christmas, there were presents under the tree and one with his name on it. It was very heavy, even though it was not that big (maybe 6-8 inches wide and tall). My mom was teasing him by often moving that present, and dropping it, pretending it might have broken. He was so annoyed! It turned out, when he opened it, on Christmas day, that my mom had bought a decorative rock for the aquarium. There was no way it would break, no matter how often she would drop it on our carpeted floor. We had a good laugh for quite a while, remembering how afraid he was to get a broken present!

Carole, that was funny & Patricia a very sweet story.

I don't have a story about a present, but, I have a funny Christmas story.

When I was 15 I moved to Ky to live with my mother's sister.  She was my Aunt Ree.  She had a wonderful sense of humor and I was scared to death having lived in multiple foster homes.  We made Gingerbread Men to hang on the tree my Uncle Phillip & I went up in the mountains and cut ourselves.  We were decorating the cookies, and she took chocolate sprinkles and put them in the Gingerbread Men's armpits and crotches!  She giggled and I was shocked!  We hung them on the tree and no one noticed.  This is one of my fondest memories!

Thirty-odd years ago I had an ambition to own a Kenwood Chef food mixer, and every Christmas, when Russell asked what I wanted, I would say "apart from the Kenwood I would like ..." knowing full well the Kenwood was way too expensive. One year my request was for a collapsible umbrella which were quite new & popular at the time and sure enough there appeared under the tree a parcel that was about a 18" long. Of course I cheated when Russell wasn't around and prodded and poked it: it had a hard core and a soft outside, so it was pretty obvious what it was. Christmas morning Russell said that as I knew what that parcel was I should open it first. Well it turned out the parcel was the inside cardboard roll from some foil, with wrapped around it an old net curtain and wrapped around that?  The guarantee of my Kenwood Chef!!!! What a lovely surprise. I still have the mixer, I use it regularly and always think about the Christmas I received it.
