I think I would be inclined to choose a colour from the photo, preferably a yellow using the pointer tool, and tone it right down. Also use a matching colour to create an outer flat thin border, like in the sparrow page. I don’t do anything that will distract the eye away from my photos. The outer flat border, will help focus the eye on the photo.
